Designing Just Futures

Exploring emerging questions at the intersection of health and digital technologies to identify community-centered, foward-looking solutions that advance health justice
At Health Justice, we believe that shaping a just future requires both imagination and intention. Designing Just Futures helps health-aligned institutions grapple with the role of digital technologies in health and co-create solutions led by communities most impacted by health inequities, grounded in justice, care, and accountability.
We develop frameworks, learning experiences, and prototypes that explore how evolving challenges in healthcare and public health, such as artificial intelligence, can be approached in ways that reflect the priorities and lived realities of communities burdened by structural inequity, while reducing harm.

Our Guiding Principle

Communities identify health prioritand shape solutions. Technology serves as a solution only when communities decide.

The ORCHID Framework: Organizational Readiness for Community-Led Health Artifical Intelligence Partnership

Most health care and public health organizations begin by asking: “What AI solution can we build/buy?”.

Health Justice encourages organizations to ask a different question: “Are we ready to commit to community-led partnerships around health AI?”

Try out our organizational readiness framework if you’re:

  • Considering AI for a health or health care-related issue
  • Facing pressure to adopt health AI quickly
  • Responding to funding that requires community engagement and health AI
  • Responding to a community requests for support with health AI

Work Area

As we expand our work in this area, our focus will include:

Design-based frameworks and prototypes that help institutions envision and build more just futures. These frameworks draw on human-centered and systems design principles to guide teams through collaborative problem-solving, surface root causes, and translate bold ideas into practical strategies.
Speculative and participatory design  projects grounded in community wisdom and systems thinking.
Field-building initiatives that bring together practitioners, researchers, and community leaders to shape collective approaches to innovation.

Whether we’re helping health leaders think critically about emerging technologies or co-creating practical tools for long-term change, our goal is to ensure the future of health starts with communities.
